Lloyd’s Register (LR) has released its R5.1 (Risk Management for Bulk Carriers) for the dry bulk industry. This represents the first in a series of risk management guidance notes, developed in collaboration with a number of stakeholders in the dry bulk industry. R5.1 was developed in response to the increasing number of incidents involving dry bulk vessels that have occurred in recent years, and is designed to provide guidance on how to effectively manage the risks associated with operating such vessels. The guidance note covers a range of topics, including vessel design and construction, operational risk management, and maintenance. It also provides information on how to develop and maintain a risk assessment program, as well as how to implement and maintain an effective safety management system. The guidance note also provides guidance on how to identify, assess and mitigate the risks associated with operating in different areas, such as the Arctic, and how to respond to emergency situations.
