Leaders in the New England and Mid-Atlantic states are calling on the federal government to quickly approve a plan to reopen the nation’s economy amid the coronavirus pandemic. The governors of Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island said in a joint statement Monday that it will be “critical” for the federal government to provide additional guidance and resources to help states reopen safely. The governors said they are developing a “comprehensive and coordinated plan” to reopen their economies, but need the federal government to act quickly to provide much-needed assistance. “We plan to announce our regional plan in the coming days and we urge the federal government to take swift action to support our efforts,” the governors said. The governors said they must have access to additional testing and equipment, as well as the resources necessary to expand contact tracing and to ensure the safety of employees and customers as businesses are allowed to reopen. The governors urged the federal government to provide more economic stimulus to help businesses and workers weather the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. They said the federal government should also provide additional funds for state and local governments, which have been hard hit by the pandemic. “The federal government must provide us with the resources we need to protect the health and safety of our residents and the economic security of our states,” the governors said.
