Born Aug. 12 (25), 1898, in St. Petersburg; died June 15, 1963, in Leningrad. Soviet Russian actor and director. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1936).
In 1916, Knipper graduated from the studio at the Mariinskii Theater in St. Petersburg and was accepted into the troupe of the theater. He became a master of the “small-scale” role and won renown in the roles of Gurov (Chekhov’s The Seagull), Korobkin (Gogol’s The Inspector General), and Vershinin (Chekhov’s Three Sisters).
In 1925, Knipper became an actor at the Lenin Komsomol Theater (now the Leningrad Malyi Drama Theater). He became the theater’s director in 1929, and under his direction the theater achieved renown as one of the best in the Soviet Union. Knipper directed the productions of plays by A. N. Ostrovskii, Gorky, and A. P. Chekhov. Among his most successful productions were Ostrovskii’s The Storm (1935), The Living Corpse (1936), and The Forest (1949) and Gorky’s The Lower Depths (1936) and Summerfolk (1937).
Knipper taught at the Leningrad Institute of Stage Arts (GITIS) from 1945 to 1963. He wrote the book Galina Ulanova: Her Art and Life (1948). He was awarded the Order of Lenin and two other orders.
