Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday said he had asked the Centre to provide additional financial assistance to the state, which was facing a revenue loss of over Rs 18,000 crore due to the coronavirus-induced curbs. He said the Centre should fulfil its commitment to extend the special economic package to the state as promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the last session of the Parliament. The Chief Minister said he had written to the Prime Minister to urge the Centre to provide relief to the state in this hour of crisis. “I have asked the Centre to provide additional financial assistance to the state to supplement the efforts of the state government in mitigating the effects of the pandemic,” Singh said in a statement here. He said the state had suffered an estimated revenue loss of Rs 18,000 crore due to the impact of the pandemic. The Chief Minister said the Centre had promised to provide an economic package to the state in the last session of the Parliament to offset the losses and meet the expenditure on relief and welfare measures. “However, the package has not yet been received, despite my several requests,” he said. Singh said the state was in dire need of additional resources to pay for the additional expenditure incurred by it for the welfare of the people of Punjab during the pandemic. He said the state had already provided relief to the people in the form of free ration, distribution of cash, free electricity and other welfare measures. The Chief Minister said he had also requested the Centre to provide funds for the construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. “The state government has already spent a lot of money on the construction of the SYL and needs additional funds to complete the project,” he said. Singh said the Centre should also provide the state with funds to tide over the problems caused by the pandemic.
