Carla Hinton The Rev. Robert Turner is the new senior pastor at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. The church, which dates to 1893, is one of the oldest churches in the state. It has served as the spiritual home to generations of African American families. Turner was introduced to the congregation during a special service Aug. 2. He comes to St. John from Tucker, Georgia, where he served as pastor of Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church since 2013. Turner, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He earned a master's degree in divinity from Morehouse School of Religion in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Turner said before he accepted the call to St. John, he prayed about it for weeks. He said he felt at peace with the decision, and he is excited about his new ministry. “I'm here to expand, enhance, empower and engage the work of God in the city of Oklahoma City and beyond," he said. Turner, his wife, LaDawn, and their children, Robert Jr. and Alexandra, are looking forward to making Oklahoma City their home. He said he will focus on ministry that encourages people to pursue their dreams and to make a difference in their community. “I want to remind them that God has a plan for their lives," said Turner, who is an ordained minister with the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. He said he wants to build strong partnerships with other churches and to collaborate with community organizations for the good of the community. He said he also wants to create a church atmosphere that is inviting and welcoming. “We want to create a church home where people will want to come because they know they can expect something that is meaningful and that will cause them to grow spiritually,” Turner said.
