+ + The term “metabolic syndrome” (MetS) was coined by Reaven to describe the powerful association between insulin resistance (IR) and cardiovascular risk factors.1 Over the past decade, MetS has been the focus of numerous epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and expert consensus panels. This has resulted in a greater understanding of the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and management of MetS. + + The definition of MetS remains controversial, but a consensus definition has been developed by a panel of experts convened by the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI).2 This definition proposes the presence of three or more of the following criteria to establish a diagnosis of MetS: + + Abdominal obesity (waist circumference >102 cm in men, >88 cm in women) Serum triglycerides > 150 mg/dL Serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) < 40 mg/dL in men and <50 mg/dL in women Systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥85 mm Hg Fasting glucose ≥110 mg/dL + + MetS is highly prevalent in the United States. In a nationally representative sample, the prevalence of MetS was 25% in adults aged 20 to 74 years.3 In adults aged 60 to 69 years, the prevalence of MetS was 38%.4 + + MetS is more common in certain ethnic groups. The prevalence of MetS is higher in African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians/Alaska Natives compared with non-Hispanic whites.3,5 + + MetS is also more common in certain age groups. The prevalence of MetS is higher in adults aged 45 to 64 years compared with adults aged 20 to 44 years.3 + + The prevalence of MetS is higher in women compared with men.3 + + The prevalence of MetS is higher in individuals with certain comorbid conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.3,6 + + MetS is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Individuals with MetS have an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and all-cause mortality.7,8 + +
