The 5th Annual Climb to Fight Cancer benefiting the American Cancer Society took place on Sunday, March 11 at the Silvermine Ski Area in Meriden. The event, which was created by brothers, Adam and Matt O’Connell, has become a family tradition to honor their father, who passed away from cancer in 2008.
This year’s event was the most successful to date, raising over $9,000 for the American Cancer Society. The event featured a ski race, a raffle and the annual group climb up the hill.
“The success of the event is due to all the people who came out and supported us,” said Matt O’Connell. “There was a great turn out. We are so thankful for everyone who came out and donated their time and money to help us fight cancer.”
The race, which was held on the lower mountain, was very competitive in both the men’s and women’s divisions. The men’s race was won by Matt Mello, with Adam O’Connell in second. The women’s race was won by Katelyn O’Connell, with Katie O’Connell in second. After the race, everyone gathered at the top of the hill for the group climb, which was led by Adam and Matt.
“The group climb was a great way to end the day and remember the reason why we were there,” said Adam. “It was an emotional moment for everyone who participated.”
The event was also supported by the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life teams from Cheshire, Hamden and Southington.
“It was great to have the teams come out and support us,” said Matt. “They were all so enthusiastic and it was great to see so many people come together to fight cancer.”
The brothers plan to hold the event again next year.
“We are already looking forward to next year’s event,” said Adam. “We hope to make it even bigger and better.”
