The 617 squadron, also known as the Dambusters, will be among the aircraft taking part in a display over the county's coast. The squadron, which was formed in 1943, will fly over the Wainfleet bombing range on 17 July. The event is part of a series of national and local activities, including a Red Arrows display at RAF Scampton, to mark 100 years since the RAF was formed in 1918. The Dambusters squadron was formed to carry out a daring raid on German dams in the Ruhr valley during World War Two. The squadron is currently based at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray and is equipped with the Tornado GR4. In total, about 20 aircraft from the RAF, British Army and Royal Navy will take part in the display. The RAF centenary is also being marked with a flypast over London on 10 July. The formation will include Tornado aircraft and the Red Arrows, alongside a Spitfire, a Lancaster and a Hurricane.
