The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government on Thursday welcomed South Africa's move to level two of the nationwide lockdown. The province's MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, said the decision was the result of a decrease in the number of Covid-19 cases in the province. “This step will go a long way in providing some relief to our province’s battered economy. We remain grateful to the President for listening to the views of the provincial government regarding the need to relax certain measures so that economic activities can resume," said Dube-Ncube. The MEC called on all businesses in the province to observe the regulations that have been put in place to ensure the safety of their employees, customers and the public in general. “We urge all businesses to put in place health and safety protocols to ensure that they protect their employees, customers and the public in general. “We also ask members of the public to continue to observe the safety protocols as set out by the President, such as wearing masks, social distancing and handwashing. We must all work together to ensure that Covid-19 cases remain low in the province,” said Dube-Ncube. The MEC also thanked the public for their cooperation during the lockdown and for observing the health protocols that have been put in place to contain the spread of Covid-19. In a statement released on Thursday by the South African government, the country's President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the move to level two of the lockdown. The lockdown regulations were eased on Monday, allowing for some of the country’s businesses to open. “The risk of transmission is still very high and, if we are to prevent a resurgence of infections, we must remain vigilant and continue to adhere to the health protocols that have been put in place. “We must also continue to wear face masks, keep a safe distance and practise good hygiene,” added Dube-Ncube.
