Delegation of the European Union to the United States
The Delegation of the European Union to the United States (EU Delegation) represents the European Union in the United States and is responsible for promoting the European Union's interests in the United States and developing bilateral relations. The current Head of Delegation is Stavros Lambrinidis who arrived in April 2019.
The Delegation is based in Washington, D.C. and is part of the European External Action Service. It works in close cooperation with the 28 EU Member States who have embassies in Washington, D.C. and in other parts of the United States.
The Delegation is headed by the Head of Delegation who is the official representative of the European Union in the United States. He is responsible for the daily management of the Delegation and for reporting to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and to European Commission President on the political situation in the United States and the bilateral relations with the EU. The Head of Delegation is assisted by a Deputy Head of Delegation who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Delegation.
The Delegation of the European Union to the United States is the largest of the EU's diplomatic missions in the United States. It is composed of a core staff of around 70 people and is supported by a staff of around 100 locally engaged personnel. The Delegation has five sections – Political, Press and Communication, Trade, Economics and Transatlantic Relations, and Management. It also includes a number of specialized units, such as the Transatlantic Task Force, the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue, the Transatlantic Digital Economy Dialogue, the Transatlantic Energy Dialogue and the Transatlantic Environmental Partnership.
History
The Delegation of the European Union to the United States was established in 1995 as part of the Transatlantic Declaration, which provided for a formal structure for the EU's bilateral relations with the United States. The Delegation is a part of the network of European Union Delegations in the world and represents the European Union in the United States in political, economic, trade, and other matters.
Until 2008, the Delegation was known as the Delegation of the European Commission to the United States. In 2008, the Delegation was renamed the Delegation of the European Union to the United States in order to reflect the fact that the European Union is now a fully integrated actor in the international arena.
Location
The Delegation of the European Union to the United States is located in Washington, D.C. at 2300 M Street NW. It is located in the heart of the city's West End neighborhood, near the White House and the U.S. Department of State.
