The Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) program is an arts-based program serving at-risk youth in Houston, Texas. Focusing on diverse cultural backgrounds of students, MECA works with students to develop and improve social and emotional skills. History MECA was founded in 1994 by artist and educator, Ovide Duncantell, as a nonprofit organization. It began as a community-based program and has since grown to become an after-school education and counseling program. MECA is currently located on the campuses of four Houston Independent School District (HISD) schools, including Whidby Elementary, Navarro Middle, Dowling Middle, and Wheatley High School. Program Model MECA uses an arts-based approach to education and counseling. The program consists of an “integrated counseling and teaching model” which combines the “museums, galleries, libraries, and other cultural resources in Houston and the surrounding area” to develop the social and emotional skills of students. MECA provides students with a safe and nurturing environment where they are able to explore their culture and heritage through the arts. Through this exploration students are encouraged to “develop self-confidence, express their feelings and ideas, and develop healthy relationships”. MECA also provides students and their families with access to mental health resources, including individual and family counseling, as well as community resources, such as job training and housing assistance. Goals The goal of the MECA program is to provide students with the necessary skills to become successful in their academic and personal lives. The program aims to address the disparities in educational achievement for students from diverse cultural backgrounds by providing them with access to culturally-relevant and meaningful arts-based education and counseling. In addition, MECA seeks to empower students and their families by providing them with access to resources and services that will help them create a safe and supportive environment for themselves and their families. Impact MECA has had a positive impact on the lives of the students it serves. The program has been successful in improving student academic performance, as well as in increasing students’ self-esteem and social-emotional development. In addition, MECA has helped to reduce truancy and behavioral issues among students, and has improved communication between students and their families. The program has also been successful in creating a safe and supportive environment for students and their families, which has helped to foster a sense of community among program participants.
