Sobhan Babu Sobhan Babu (14 January 1937 – 20 March 2008), popularly known as Shobhan Babu, was an Indian film actor in Telugu cinema. He was also a recipient of the Padma Shri Award, India's fourth highest civilian award. Early life Sobhan Babu was born on 14 January 1937 to Subrahmanya Sastry, a school teacher and Venkata Seshamma in Narsapuram, West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. His father was a great scholar in the Sanskrit language. Sobhan Babu did his primary schooling in Narsapuram. He was a bright student, excelling in academics and sports. He enrolled in the degree course at the Andhra-Christian College, Guntur, where he stayed in the hostel. He practised and participated in the high jump and the long jump. He learnt Kuchipudi dance form and was trained under the guru Vempati Chinna Satyam. Career Sobhan Babu started his career in 1957 with Sri Rajeswari Vilas Coffee Club. He went on to act in over 225 films in a career spanning five decades, of which 195 were in Telugu and 25 in Tamil. By his standards, he acted in very few Hindi films, only 3. He was one of the most successful and leading actors of Telugu cinema during the 1970s and 1980s. He was the first Telugu actor to be awarded the Padmasri Award in 1970. Sobhan Babu's first film as a hero was Bhakta Sabari (1958). He acted in a variety of roles ranging from a romantic hero in Mayabazar (1960) and Anuragam (1963) to a comical role in Bhale Bhale Mogudu (1988). He also acted in some serious roles such as Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari (1990). He was referred to as "Suave Superstar" by his fans. In his career, he won four Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Awards and one Filmfare Award. He was awarded the Padma Shri Award, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 1970. Personal life Sobhan Babu married Shobha in 1962. They had two sons and a daughter. Death In the early hours of 20 March 2008, Sobhan Babu died of a heart attack in Chennai. He was 71 at the time of his death.
