Abstract
We present an analytical solution for the problem of determining the most probable path of a particle moving in a three-dimensional unbounded potential field. Our solution is based upon an analogy with harmonic oscillators and is applicable to any plasma or other physical system with such a field. The particle is assumed to be moving in the direction of the motion of its energy equipartition surface. The method of solution is a generalization of the method of Lagrange multipliers. The solution is applicable to a variety of physical systems and has been applied to the problem of the guiding-center orbit in a uniform magnetic field.
